Mutual funds are regulated by SEBI, which prescribed certain requirements about KYC norms for financial institutions and related intermediaries to know their customers. All investors in mutual funds are required to be a KYC compliant before investing in this instrument with effect from January 1, 2012. If you have plans to invest in mutual funds, you can apply for the same through any KYC Rating Agencies like Karvy, NSDL, CVL, NSE, or CAMS. If you invest in this instrument without completing the KYC process, the respective mutual fund houses will reject your transactions. So, complete this one-time verification process to make all your mutual fund investments valid.

KYC registration Process

Before getting an idea about how to check the status of your KYC, you need to know how to register for KYC. A person can start investing in mutual funds once he or she becomes a KYC complaint.  This process is aimed to control illegal activities. You need to download the KYC form if you plan to register for it online.  Submit the form along with a few necessary documents to become a KYC complaint. The documents required for KYC registration are:

  • ID proof (PAN card, Aadhaar Card, Passport Copy, Driving Licence, Bank passbook with photo or Voter ID)
  • Proof of address (You can submit a recent electricity bill, mobile or landline bill, rental agreement, passport copy, Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, driving license or bank passbook as your proof of address)
  • A passport size photograph

How to check the KYC status online

Once you have registered for KYC by filling up a KYC form and submitted all the required documents, you can check the status of it online. Visit the website of any of the KYC Registration Agencies (KRAs), whether your registration is Aadhaar based or PAN-based. For people who apply for their KYC registration based on Aadhar, you can check the status of it by putting your Aadhaar number or UIDAI. Instead of Aadhaar number, provide your PAN number if you have done a PAN-based KYC registration.

For checking your KYC status, you need to visit any of the websites and enter your PAN number or Applicant’s name and other details like Date of Birth and Address. Also, type the code shown in the box on the screen and click the ‘SUBMIT’ button. Now you can check the status of your KYC. An individual can go ahead with the process of mutual fund registration if his or her KYC status is ‘Verified’, ‘New KYC Registered’, or ‘In process’. However, your KYC registration is incomplete and needs to initiate the process again if its status is ‘Invalid Data’.
